De populatie leeuwen in Afrika is in de laatste 50 jaar gedaald van bijna 100.000 naar 35.000 dieren, blijkt uit een recent rapport van de Amerikaanse Duke University in Noord-Carolina. Dat betekent dat de leeuw binnenkort een bedreigde diersoort kan zijn. Oorzaak is enerzijds de vernietiging van zijn leefomgeving, en anderzijds de groeiende vraag naar trofeeën en lichaamsdelen, verkregen door jacht en stroperij.
